All About Pocket Diapers

Pocket Diapers:

Pocket Diapers are the great invention in the modern cloth diapering world. They consist of two layers sewn on three side with an opening usually in the back into which you stuff absorbent material. The outer layer of the pocket diaper is a waterproof layer usually made of Polyurethane Laminated Polyester or PUL. PUL is not only waterproof, but breathable which allows your baby's skin to stay healthier. The inner layer of the pocket diaper is usually made of a stay dry material, such as microfleece or suedecloth. This layer allows moisture through, but remains dry to the touch.

Pocket diapers usually fasten with either snaps or aplix (hook and loop) and DO NOT need a separate cover. Because of this, pocket diapers are as easy to use as disposable diapers. These are great for caregivers outside the house, babysitters, and even Dad.

Pocket diapers can be stuffed with a variety of absorbent materials, called inserts*. You can either purchase pre-made inserts or stuff your pocket diapers with such things as folded prefold diapers, or towels. Inserts can be made from cotton, hemp, microfiber and more. Virtually anything that is absorbent.

The great thing about pocket diapers is that you control the amount of absorbency based on the needs of your baby. During the day, you may only need a single insert. However at night or nap time, you might need a couple of inserts or two different types of material to reach the absorbency your child needs. The choices are endless.

Because of the stay dry inner layer of pocket diapers, you have to carefully select your washing products. You must choose additive free laundry detergents that don't built-up on the fabric. You also can not use fabric softeners on pocket diapers, as they too build-up on the fabric. Any build-up on the stay-dry layer could potentially prevent fluid from passing through, which could cause leaks. However if problems do occur, we are here to help you find a solution**.
